Leadership Changes in the Controller's Office

Associate Vice Chancellor and Controller John Ellis will be retiring at the beginning of November 2019. John’s last day in the office was September 26.

John has served as the UCSF Controller for eight years during which he has successfully spearheaded many initiatives that have streamlined and modernized UCSF’s financial and accounting practices.  John led his teams to successfully implement a new chart of accounts and a new financial reporting system (MyReports) during two of three projects of Finance3 (the third project, a new budgeting system, was led by Budget and Resource Management).  Finance3 transformed how UCSF records, accesses, and analyzes financial information providing comprehensive and accurate data for decision-making at all levels of our organization. John has been instrumental in the efforts to integrate UCSF campus and UCSF Health accounting, resulting in our ability to accommodate the growth and complexity of UCSF’s finances. Additionally, with the implementation of MyExpense, John made possible a decrease in processing of reimbursements for out-of-pocket expenses from over 30 days to less than 3 days.

Prior to becoming the Controller at UCSF, John served as the Controller at the University of California, Berkeley. During his 12 years on the Berkeley campus, John made significant improvements including implementing the Effort Reporting System, developing a new chart of accounts, and implementing PeopleSoft Financials.

Assistant Controller Shannon Turner will serve as the Interim Controller effective September 26, 2019, while a national search for John’s replacement is being conducted. Shannon has been with UCSF in the Controller’s Office for over six years, first as the General Accounting Manager and currently as the Assistant Controller of Accounting and Reporting. Prior to joining UCSF, she worked for FedEx in Memphis as Manager of International Accounting and for Ernst and Young in Palo Alto as a Senior Auditor. Shannon holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Santa Clara University and is a certified public accountant.
