How to Determine FLSA Exemption Status

The UC systemwide Compensation Office, in compliance with the legal requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), establishes the overall FLSA exemption status for jobs (University of California, Policy PPSM 30 (opens in new window)).

This guide explains two ways you can determine whether your job, based on the job code of your Primary Title in UCPath, is exempt or non-exempt from FLSA overtime regulations. For assistance, contact your manager or supervisor or your UCSF Human Resources representative (opens in new window).

Before You Begin: Find Your Primary Title in UCPath

Both options require you to know your Primary Title or Job Code. To quickly obtain your Primary Title:

  1. Log into UCPath(opens in new window).
  2. Copy the Primary Title displayed above your UCPath dashboard to your clipboard .

Option 1: Check Premium Overtime Eligibility Using The University of California Job Code Lookup

This option uses your primary title to find your job code and retrieve your premium overtime eligibility.

  1. Navigate to the University of California Job Code Lookup(opens in new window) page, and click the appropriate category your job falls into, either Academic Titles or Non Academic Titles .

  2. Paste the Primary Title you copied from UCPath into the Title Name (or partial name) field, and then click Search .

  3. Click the Job Code link that represents your job title .
    • A pop-up window displays the title information. You will find your Premium Overtime Eligibility in the Detail Information section of the pop-up, either Exempt (ineligible for premium overtime) or Non-Exempt (eligible for premium overtime) .

Option 2: Use the Job Codes Data Lookup

  1. Navigate to the Financial Codes and Data Lookup(opens in new window) tool (UCSF network/VPN access and MyAccess authentication required) and then click on the Job Codes link under the UCPath heading .

  2. Enter part or all of the title you copied from UCPath in the Search by Job Code or Description field and then click Search .
  3. Find your Job Code/Description and review the FLSA Status column, either Exempt (ineligible for premium overtime) or Nonexempt (eligible for premium overtime) .
