How to Select a Work Rule in MyTime

This reference guide describes the use and structure of work rules in MyTime and provides a list work rules and links to instructions on how to select a work rule on the schedule or timecard.

In MyTime, all employees are assigned a pay rule that defines how employees are paid for different types of time, such as regular hours, overtime, vacation, or sick time. The pay rule reflects the pay policies stipulated in the employees’ union contract or in UC policy. Think of the pay rule like a standard base used to calculate the different types of time.

However, there are situations when the assigned pay rule will need to be adjusted to accommodate circumstances such as shift changes or specific types of work like call back, time on call, or in charge time. In these situations, the work rule is used to adjust how the assigned pay rule is applied. This is called a work rule transfer in MyTime. Selecting the work rule in the timecard tells the system to calculate the specific type of work (for example, call back).

Work rules in MyTime replace the use of some pay codes in HBS. Review the HBS Paycode to MyTime Mapping lookup tool for details.

Work rules are divided into 3 parts:

  1. Bargaining Unit (first two characters): tells MyTime what set of pay rules to apply to the employee
  2. Work Schedule (next five characters): tells MyTime the set hours and overtime threshold for the employee
  • The first number is the employee’s daily work hours
  • The second number is the overtime threshold - do they earn overtime for working more than 40 hours in one work week or more than 80 hours in two work weeks (less common)
  1. Type of Work (remaining characters): tells MyTime the type of work to be performed
